Im Fokus seiner Lehr- und Forschungstätigkeit sowie seinen Veröffentlichungen steht die Geschichte der modernen westlichen Esoterik und ihr Verhältnis zu Magie, Kunst und Politik. Der promovierte Religionswissenschaftler ist leitendes Mitglied des Forschungsnetzwerks Enchanted Modernities und war an verschiedenen Ausstellungen als Kurator beteiligt, etwa bei La Chambre des Cauchemars: Peintures inconnues d’Aleister Crowley im Palais de Tokyo (Paris, 2008), Believe not every spirit, but try the spirits am MUMA Monash University Museum of Art (Melbourne, 2015) und Georgiana Houghton: Spirit Drawings in der Courtauld Gallery (London, 2016). Sein Buch Aleister Crowley and the Temptation of Politics (2014) wurde in mehrere Sprachen übersetzt, und er ist Mitherausgeber von Kabbalah and Modernity: Interpretations, Transformations, Adaptations (2010).
